Center for National
Security Studies, et al. v. Department of Justice, regarding the post-September 11 secret detentions
January 12, 2004: The
United States Supreme Court denied the Center's request to consider the issue
of secret arrests.
Kate Martin, Director of
the Center said:
"We are disappointed
that the Court denied cert in the case.
The Justice Department is
keeping the names secret to cover up its misconduct - holding people
incommunicado and without charges. The cover-up maintains the fiction that the
government was going after terrorists when it instead was rounding up hundreds
of innocent Arabs and Muslims.
We are fortunate that the Inspector General in
this case could document part of the story, even with incomplete information.
But without action by Congress or the public, the Justice Department will be
free to repeat these abuses in the future.
We call upon the
Administration and the Congress to release the names and to insure that
individuals are not again jailed in secret with no protection against
abuse."
